Petone Community Board Chairperson’s Report – February 2017
Tena koutou katoa Talofa lava Malo e lelei Neih Hou Namaste
Greetings and best wishes for 2017 to board members and community residents and welcome to what is sure to be a busy and productive year in our board area of Korokoro, Petone, Seaview, Moera, Waiwhetu South and Woburn South – called Petone for short.
a) Petone Wharf
Perhaps the lack of summer weather has been a protest about the Petone Wharf being closed since it sustained damage in the 14 November Kaikoura earthquake. Four board members went to a December briefing by Council officers on the state of all the four Lower Hutt wharves and we look forward to encouraging consultation and being part of decision-making on the future of the Petone Wharf and plan to hold a public meeting in February or March.
b) Emergency Management
Thanks to the four board members who helped get responses to a Tsunami response survey organised by GNS Science and Massey, Canterbury and Otago Universities. We look forward to the results being shared with us through our local emergency management organisation (WREMO) and to having follow up discussions.
c) Petone 2040
There has been work being done on a draft vision for the future of Petone called P2040 and new board members have started to get up to speed with what is involved and we are hoping that a lot of people will have been to one of the consultation sessions at the Petone Library on Saturday 28 January.
d) Fluoride Amendment Bill
The Health (Fluoridation of Drinking Water) Amendment Bill before the Health Select Committee was brought to the Board’s attention and we will be retrospectively agreeing to a submission asking that Petone’s water stays unflouridated – regardless of whether it is HCC (which has respected Petone’s wishes since the early 90s), or the DHB making decisions about this in the future.
e) Communication Working Group
The working group we set up to investigate advertising and communication at our first meeting has come up with the report attached as Appendix 1.
f) Traffic Lights
We followed up on the traffic lights at the Petone Avenue intersection of Hutt Road. These are a condition of the development of the new Kmart so how they work for Korokoro residents in particular is now going to be the important thing as is working on overall traffic and parking in Petone.
g) Petone Sign by SH2 Overbridge
Board members are keen to have the entrance to Petone better signposted and members of the public have been in touch about the current drab looking sign.
h) ANZAC Day Working Group
The Board has agreed to establish an ANZAC Day Working Group consisting of Deputy Chair Mike Fisher, Mason Branch, Brady Dyer and Mr Gerald Davidson as an external representative (with flag responsibilities at the Petone Railway Station).
i) Annual Plan
The Board agrees to hold a public meeting to discuss Hutt City Council's Draft Annual Plan 2017-18 with the Petone Community on a suitable date confirmed once the draft Annual Plan has been adopted by Council.
For board members to represent and advocate well on behalf of our community we need to hear from you. Board members will be on hand at the Hutt News Petone Rotary Fair on Saturday 18 February. The board site will be just before the Queen Street intersection and outside Flowers Etc and Ollie and Mi. Do call by and let us know e.g. what you think should happen with the wharf.
We are also instituting a last week of the month coffee club when anyone is welcome to come and have a coffee with board members any time between 10 and 11.30am. The first one is on Saturday 25 February at Café Chavi and the second on Wednesday 29 March at Caffiend and https://www.facebook.com/pcbhcc/ is the link to our facebook page and sign up for our emails via http://eepurl.com/cq33Zj.

Community Board Advertising/Communication Protocols and Actions
The PCB facebook page will be about core Community Board business and HCC shared info re matters pertaining to our community board area. So it will mainly be about upcoming Board meetings, results of our meetings, notice of any community meeting we might be holding and suchlike.
We will also share posts about any community events such as school galas or the Xmas parade. We will also build an email list and use Mail Chimp as another form of communication.
It is important that it is always the Board as a whole that is advertised - not individual board members. Immediately after our formal meetings we will video the Chair and a rotating member of the Board with the video being posted on the fb page.
For advertising of our meetings e.g. we will purchase a flag plus a sandwich board. We will also have posters for street notice boards and for the Library. A monthly café community board presence will be organised – and fitted in with other dates from early 2017 on.
A Petone Community Board logo – We will explore having a competition to do with the wharf e.g. and/or the Settlers as possibilities via schools e.g. and then have a logo developed by a professional.
P2040 – A major consultation day will be on Saturday 28 January and help will be needed for guiding the public through the consultation panels– the Community Board will support this and future P2040 initiatives.
